We back people we believe in. We support organisations small and large, young and mature, which have both the potential to effect broad change longer term and the ability to reflect and adapt. Mutual trust is key to our approach which requires an open and frank relationship.
Beyond that we look for organisations that have strong leadership with good quality local management and staff who can match their passion and drive with professionalism and integrity. We like our partners to be ambitious with a clear mission which fulfils our aims as well as theirs. Equally important is sound financial management, financial transparency and an ability to raise or generate funds over the longer term. We also place great emphasis on good governance defined by an active board of trustees with a range of relevant skills and experience, clear roles and responsibilities between board and management, and sound checks and balances.
Much of our own learning comes from our partners’ experiences, both their successes and their failures. We know that things don’t always go to plan, that new organisations and initiatives need to start somewhere, and that not everything will work. What is important is our partners’ commitment to measuring and analysing results, and to sharing with us and others the learning that comes from it.
