A purposeful sunset
On 27 March 2026, we announced our decision to begin a planned sunset of the Maitri Trust, with final closure of the Trust expected in April 2028.
Following changes affecting our future funding announced in November 2025, we entered a period of deep analysis and consultation, exploring a range of possible paths forward. Ultimately, we concluded that a planned and intentional sunset offers the best way to honour Maitri’s founding purpose and ensure our remaining resources deliver meaningful, lasting change for children.
While choosing to sunset was not an easy decision, we enter this final chapter with a renewed sense of purpose. We believe sunsetting presents an opportunity to work with urgency, clarity and focus to direct our remaining resources where they can have the greatest long-term impact for children. We are deeply conscious of the responsibility that comes with doing this well, and are determined to shape a legacy that continues improving children’s learning long after our final grant is made.
Thanks to our founder
We extend our deepest thanks to our sole donor of almost 20 years, Stewart Investors, whose support has gone far beyond financial contributions through the time, guidance and encouragement they have so readily given. Founded with the vision of giving back to the communities in which Stewart Investors were active, Maitri has been entrusted with more than £74.5 million of their philanthropic giving since 2006.

Grantmaking during our sunset
We are committed to approaching our sunset phase with thoughtfulness and care, particularly for our existing partners, who we will work with closely throughout this period.
During this transition, we will not be considering any new or additional requests for funding, including from organisations we already support.
The Maitri Trust will continue to comply with all regulatory obligations throughout this period.
